Is Jesus Really God? Bible Verses that prove his deity
Or was He just a vessel used for the work of God…
This question comes up more and more lately. I won’t point out the people that take away His deity, I will however, offer up a brief explanation on why He was indeed God, in the human flesh.
First of all, the sacrifices that were offered in the old testament, had to be pure. According to Leviticus chapter 1. It was to be a male without blemish. Now, there are some faiths out there that believe Christ was just a man, what human is without sin? Romans 3:23 clearly goes against this. Christ was born of a virgin, that in itself is a miracle. As described in Matt chapter 1, and Luke chapter 2. So from the beginning of Christ’s life on earth, He was unstained by sin. Since He was not born the conventional way (man and women uniting). And even better, in the book of John, chapter 1 we see this:
1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made.
Followed by verse 14 :
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Now following the context, we have that Christ, was born flesh, but was God from the beginning. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen His glory.
There are many out there that say “Jesus never said :I am God”. But the issue with that statement, is they ignore Greek vocabulary, grammar, and Jewish culture. You see when someone took the claim of being someone’s son, he was calling himself equal to that person, and in effect, taking all authority that person had. If I was to make the claim “I am the son of -whoever-“ I am making the claim that I have that person’s authority, and that I am equal to him. So for Jesus to make the claim of being the son of God, that was blasphemy. He took that claim many places, but in particular, John 10:30, “For I and my Father are one”, now notice a little a few verses further, verse 33. The Jews answered him, saying, for a good work we stone thee not, but for blasphemy; and because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God. Now to read many of these passages in the gospels, and even the epistles that Paul wrote, we sometimes don’t get the true meaning. But clearly, the Jews understood EXACTLY whom Jesus was claiming to be. Otherwise, why would they have wanted to kill him?
There are too many verses to list in this short article on whether or not Jesus is God. But I will list a few.
1 Timothy 3:16 -Paul Said Jesus was God manifested in the flesh.
“And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the nations, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
John 20:28-Thomas called Jesus God.
“And Thomas answered, and said unto him, My Lord and my God.”
Colosians 2:8,9 -Paul said Jesus was the fullness of the Godhead bodily.
“…Christ. For in him dwelleth all of the fullness of the Godhead bodily.”
Phil. 2:5b, 6 -Paul said Jesus was God.
“… Jesus Christ, who being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God.”
John 5:18 -The Jews felt Jesus was making himself equal with God.
“Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the Sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.”
Exodus 3:14 -God identifies Himself to Moses by calling himself “I AM.” Twice Jesus refers to Himself as the “I AM.” Those around him knew exactly what he was saying and they were greatly offended.
“Jesus said unto them, Verily verily, I say you, before Abraham was, I am. Then they took up stones to cast at him …” (John 8:58, 59a) “Whom seek ye? They answered him, Jesus of Nazareth. Jesus saith unto them I am he. As soon as he said unto them, I am he, they went backward, and fell to the ground.” (John 18:4b, 5, 6)
Revelation 1:8 -18 -Jesus said, he is the Almighty Lord. The following is a vision John had of Jesus. Verses 2, 13, 17,18 identify Jesus as the:
(v 2) “… testimony of Jesus Christ …”
(v17 “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.”
(v 11) “Saying I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last…”
(v 13) “And in the midst of the seven lamp stands, one like the Son of man …”
(v 17b. 18a) “Fear not; I am the first and the last; I am he that liveth and was dead…”
Isaiah 44:6 –
In Rev 1:11, Jesus says He is the first and the last. Isa. 44:6 shows that the one who is “first and the last is actually God. “Thus saith the Lord, the King of Israel, and his redeemer, the Lord of host: I am the first, and I am the last, and beside me there is not God.”
Hebrews 1:8-God the Father said Jesus was God.
“Unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is forever and ever; a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of thy kingdom.”
Isaiah 9:6 -Jesus (the Messiah) is called the Mighty God.
“For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government shall be upon his shoulder; and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The Mighty God, the Everlasting Father, the Prince of Peace.”
As you can see, there are many many verses that make Jesus out to be God. And there’s probably a good reason for it. He IS.
I pray that the readers of my blog will see this as clearly as it’s written.
