Is there one that can’t die?
And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. (Philippians 2:8)
What’s the signification of this text? How many times have I read this text over, and thought nothing more of it. How many times, did I read it like I read many other verses in the scripture? Then last night, I it hit me. Though I have been a Christian for over 11 yrs, and growing by the grace of God….this verse never really clicked like it did recently.
First, let’s hit on who this verse is talking about. Have you ever heard of a man called Jesus Christ, that lived approx 2000 yrs ago? If not, that is the person that we are discussing in this article.
First we have to establish who Christ is. Base on numerous text in Scriptures, He is the Son of God in the flesh:
John 8:58 – Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am
Isaiah 9:6 – For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 43:10,11 – “You are My witnesses,” says the Lord, “And My servant whom I have chosen, That you may know and believe Me, and understand that I am He. Before Me there was no God formed, Nor shall there be after Me. I, even I, am the Lord, and besides Me there is no Savior.
Isaiah 44:6 – (God is the Redeemer)
2 Peter 1:1 (Jesus is the Redeemer) – “To those who have obtained like precious faith with us by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ”
John 5:23 – that all should honor the Son just as they honor the Father. He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent Him.
And there are countless more. The reason I want to bring this point, is that Jesus never sinned, and in fact, 2 Corinthians 5:21 – He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him And Romans 6:23 – For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Now read closely the last 2 verses, one says (2 Cor) that He knew no sin, and the other one says that the wages of sin is death.
Remember in the garden of Eden, when Adam and Eve sinned? They were the human representatives for the rest of us, so basically, if they fell, it affected us all. And I don’t know about you, but I have sinned more times than I care to remember, and even as I spoke to a young man recently, if you could see a video of every thought that passed through my head in the last 24 hrs, you would never see me again, I would be so humiliated. I fall in the category of Romans 6:23. But Christ doesn’t!!!! Since He was God in the flesh, He couldn’t sin. So, basically, He couldn’t die!! But Philippians 2:8 says that the only reason He died on that cross, was because it was the ONLY way to redeem us from sin!!!
My dear reader, you must give this some serious thought. Jesus NEVER claimed that you should be born again because it feels right, or as Pascal’s wager claims, if you have no religion, well, believing in something is better than not. Dear friend, Christ said “Ye MUST be born again”, for reference, this is in John 3. Christ not only just died for you, He died the death of the cross, which is still admired as one of the most torturous methods of dying that didn’t break any bones. Not only did He die on that cross, he was completely gored before hanging on that cross, and then He was separated from God and completely broken, bruised and chastised for our sins (Isaiah 53).
Now let me ask you one question in closing, if God didn’t hold back punishment on His Son, that didn’t deserve an ounce of what He got, what makes you think He will take pity on you, that sin every day. And a quick side note, sinning is throwing your fist in the air toward God saying “You will NOT have rule over me!!! Oh you might not be thinking that out loud, but if you read the 10 commandments, in Exodus 20.
3“You shall have no other gods beforea me.
4“You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, 6but showing steadfast love to thousandsb of those who love me and keep my commandments.
7“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.
8“Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, 10but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. 11For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
12“Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.
13“You shall not murder.c
14“You shall not commit adultery.
15“You shall not steal.
16“You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
17“You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.
Now if you’re going to be honest with yourself, you don’t have to tell me, how many of those do you fall short of? I fall short of all 10, DAILY!!!! Just thinking about one of these (taking a pen from work, looking at that person walking down the street and thinking perversely about them) Your opinion is not what counts at this point, truth is…
Dear friend, as you read the ending of this article, I pray that the God of the universe, the creator of all we see (tangible items) and things we don’t see (emotions, logic…) may have mercy on your soul, and show you exactly why Christ died. It was to bring you to Him. I pray you repent of your sin, and cling to that cross for eternity. Your soul depends on it.
