The Cross

Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for it is written: “Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree. (Galatians 3: 13)

This text is taken from Deuteronomy 21:22-23: If a man guilty of a capital offence is put to death and his body is hung on a tree, 23 you must not leave his body on the tree overnight. Be sure to bury him that same day, because anyone who is hung on a tree is under God’s curse. You must not desecrate the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance. Sometimes while driving, or walking in public places, you see some people with a cross (crucifix) hanging around their neck, the mirror of the car, in their house. What does this signify? It’s supposed to be an homage to Christ our Lord. It’s supposed to represent the One that did for our sins…
I have a slight issue with this. Especially since doing some research on the cross. Here are a few things you might never have realised about it.

Romans citizens were prohibited from being hung on the cross. Because the death was so brutal and agonising. For someone to have a cross hanging on their neck, visor, wall, would have been a sign of one of 2 things, either the person is deranged, or that person is completely insulting it. It was an absolute humiliation to be related to someone that was hung, let alone be the one hung. To the point that only visitors that broke the law were the ones crucified, along the path to Jerusalem and this was done as an example to others.
Today, crosses are bought all over the world as a representation. But the true meaning of it is lost. As for myself, looking at a cross is a bittersweet feeling.

I am completely broken down, in tears, almost sobbing (all on the inside, and sometimes on the outside) remembering the day that Christ revealed to me what He did.
On June 13th of the year 2000, I was brought down on my knees, at that cross and all I could do was “why me, Christ, why did you do this to save me?” I was supposed to be on that cross to suffer for breaking God’s law. Every single day, worse yet, every hour.
Today’s society, we don’t see things the same way as even 100 years ago. The homosexual society was embarrassed to the point that they would not announce themselves. Anyone that divorced, did so with extreme shame. When a child was caught doing wrong, they had remorse. Banners in town were decent and advertising the actual product sold. Now, the limits are pushed every day. How far can we go before there are consequences? How long can I be unfaithful to my spouse till I get caught. It’s easier to do it and ask forgiveness than to ask permission, and deal with them saying no. This society is so twisted around, and it was done so slowly and casually that now we don’t see it anymore. People living together out of wedlock was frowned upon years ago, now, if you don’t live with them first, you’re old fashioned.

Dear friend, how do you view the cross, is it an ornament? Is it to remind you of the one that died, my friend, don’t forget, that the cross back then was something that NO ONE wanted to be associated with. I pray that you see the cross for what it really is, not something to be looked at with admiration, but something to look at with complete humility. And I pray to God that He shows you, that He opens your heart to these truths.
You will bow the knee to Him, if not in this life, at the judgement…bow it now, and repent of your sin and see Christ on the cross, before the time is too late..
